When you picture global icons, best-selling authors, and former First Ladies, reality television isn’t typically at the forefront of what comes to mind. Yet Michelle Obama might be prepared to bend those conventions. In a recent episode of the Lemme Say This podcast, the renowned author surprised hosts Hunter Harris and Peyton Dix by naming the exact reality show she would join if given the opportunity: Peacock’s celebrated murder-mystery competition, The Traitors.
Although she describes herself as a genuine aficionado of unscripted reality drama, she made it clear that she has zero interest in becoming a Bravo mainstay.
“In my view, I could never see myself as a Real Housewife,” she stated. Instead, she is drawn to the deliberate, psychological gameplay of Traitors, “I’ve thought about Traitors. I think I would want to be a ‘faithful.’ And I would want to uncover the traitor.”
Even though a full season of wearing a peach or a diamond isn’t in her immediate plans, the former First Lady confessed there is one particular facet of the Real Housewives universe that completely fascinates her: the explosive post-season reunions.
“If I’m going to be there, I’d want to attend only for the reunions,” she explained. The former first lady has too many burning questions for the cast members who spend months shouting at one another. “I have questions. It’s like, why are we always here? Why can’t we resolve this? Ladies, come on now, we’re grown. Why do you keep meeting for dinner? It never ends well.”
Michelle Obama Could Make an Appearance On Bravo
Her comments about Real Housewives instantly drew the attention of Bravo’s quintessential reunion host and executive producer, Andy Cohen, who has moderated the reunions for almost two decades. Speaking directly to media outlets, Cohen issued a broad invitation to his “Forever FLOTUS,” enthusiastically asserting that she has an open invitation to attend or take a seat at any reunion show she would ever care to grace with her presence.
For Michelle, her affection for reality television isn’t merely a guilty pleasure; she actually analyzes the entire genre through a critical lens. During a July 2025 episode of her own podcast, IMO With Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson, she revealed that her husband, Barack Obama, and their daughters tease her endlessly about her viewing habits.
“The truth is that they tease me about my love for reality TV and the Real Housewives. I watch it all—every bit of it,” she admitted. Yet she defends her screen-time choices by likening the unscripted genre to professional sports broadcasting, calling it a compelling “sociological study.”
“There’s drama in sports,” she noted. “If I tune into ESPN for an hour, it feels like watching The Real Housewives of Atlanta. You know? It’s the same kind of drama, and they’re shouting and not getting along. What’s the difference? It’s just sociological drama. The fact that people over seasons of working together still can’t get along, they still have the same arguments—and it’s not just women, but this happens in sports, too.”
In a prior appearance on Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast, she explained that after navigating an incredibly demanding schedule, she uses unscripted television as a much-needed mental escape to simply rest her brain at night.
