Throughout the summer, Donald Trump dedicated the majority of his time to locating someone to blame for the mess surrounding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
The president treated the Washington landmark as if it were his own home-improvement project, proudly bragging about the restoration and labeling it among the upgrades branded by Trump.
His victory lap stalled when algae took over the pool, and a series of other issues came to light in the weeks that followed.
Another setback emerged when the new liner began to peel, forcing crews to drain the pool once more.
Trump did not fault the restoration work itself. Instead, he blamed vandals and pointed the finger at the Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings, a contractor tied to donors to his 2024 campaign, which had secured the project with a no-bid contract.

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has faced renewed scrutiny after officials refilled it following recent maintenance work.
Trump hoped the Reflecting Pool would serve as proof that he could make Washington beautiful again. Instead, the renovation delivered a peeling liner, a dropped felony case, and court documents that undercut months of finger-pointing.
The president continued to shift blame, insisting vandals had ruined his masterpiece. He appeared to know the truth all along, even concealing the damage behind black tarps and fences.
A National Park Service engineer reportedly warned officials about peeling in the pool’s liner just days after the refill.
The development adds to a string of issues surrounding the century-old landmark, including earlier concerns about algae and damage that led to vandalism arrests. Still, the public has questions about the so-called repairs and when they will be finished.
“Is there water in it or is it empty?” asked one X user. Another said, “Have they finished the repairs?”
Emily Miller, a reporter who has documented the Reflecting Pool for months, replied, “Not yet!” In an earlier X post on August 20, she shared that heavy rain halted the repairs.

After zooming in on her photo of a strip of water down the middle and the blue liners on the side, one person called it, “A parking lot! Geez. What an effing mess he has made of our beautiful city.”
Nearing a week later, she returned to show proof of the repairs Trump claims he completed.
“The reflecting pool repairs have restarted,” Miller said in a video shared on Aug. 24 via X.
She explained, “They’re on the North side working on a section that peeled up because they say the water came in too quickly and it didn’t have time to properly cure the blue sealant.”
Miller’s video featured clips of workers covering the newly installed granite sides built by Trump’s no-bid contractors.

According to NBC News, recent court documents reveal the administration knew the truth weeks before he started pointing fingers.
A National Park Service engineer warned Interior Department and Park Service officials on June 11 that the “top layer of liner has peeled.” The engineer said overspray during installation could leave a strip “vulnerable to peeling.”
That warning landed eight days before former Olympic canoeist David Hearn ever touched the pool.
Hearn stopped by the site on his bicycle and police observed him lifting a detached section of liner. He was detained by police and cited.
Trump turned the encounter into a major crime. On June 20, he claimed vandals used “some form of knife or blade” to carve a 250-foot gash. He said someone poured “corrosive and destructive chemicals” into the water.
Hearn got charged. Felony destruction of government property. Prosecutors later claimed they didn’t have the June warning documents when they filed the charge.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Spence said the buried information cast “significant doubt” on whether Hearn caused any damage at all.
The Justice Department dropped the case. Interior Department documents pointed to the contractor’s “flawed installation” as the real cause.
That should have closed the book. Trump had other plans. Asked directly whether contractors were responsible, he shot back: “No, no. Vandals!” He claimed someone sliced a 300-foot slit with a box cutter or knife.
By July 27, he was still telling the story on a stage in Michigan, calling it a pond instead of a pool.

He has also targeted U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office, which would later drop Hearn’s case on July 31 after receiving information that gutted its evidentiary basis.
Trump called the decision a “mistake,” and persisted in blaming vandals anyway. Yet social media followers remain unconvinced by his excuses.
“Trump lied and was willing to blame an innocent man(will 10 years in prison),” one user wrote.
“Wait…an engineer? That’s an expert. Well Trump doesn’t like people who are smarter than him near him,” another wrote. Someone else said his workers looked like “Temu technicians.”
The Reflecting Pool was meant to showcase Trump’s restoration prowess. Instead, a peeling liner, questions about the contractors, and a dropped felony case have left the project under intense scrutiny.
Now crews are repairing the damage while Trump continues to point fingers.
