For a long time, Donald Trump has treated his public image as a lever of his power.
He meticulously curates his presentation, seizing nearly every chance to project confidence, control, and polish. His appearance has remained central to the persona he conveys to supporters, critics, and the media.
Yet in the past several months, that carefully maintained image has come under repeated strain.

Trump’s newest public appearance threatens the polished image behind his signature dark suits, red ties, and blonde comb-over.
The MAGA leader’s recent hairstyle choices and a reported 240-pound weight have given online critics fresh ammunition.

Knowing how central image is to Trump, critics relish opportunities to mock the polarizing figure whenever he steps out in public wearing ill-fitting attire.
Trump recently fed his vocal detractors more fuel. Photos from his speech at the Pentagon Memorial on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks captured the attention of online trolls.
Dressed in a blue suit and red tie at the ceremony, “The Art of the Deal” author also wore an American flag pin on his lapel.
But viewers zoomed in on the extra fabric that revealed several folds in the shoulder area of the suit jacket.
“Trump’s shoulder pads extend at least 6 INCHES beyond his actual slouchy old-man shoulders, lol!” exclaimed one person on the app.
Trump’s sloppy tailoring sparked harsher responses, with commentators joking, “He forgot to remove the hanger,” from his pressed suit.
Another remarked, “Dang he looks horrible. Like an AI mash-up of Boris Johnson and Col. Sanders passed out in the IHOP parking lot after a Ronny Jackson rave.”
Trump’s preference for bulky suits was a topic of conversation even before he stepped out at the Pentagon looking disheveled.
Earlier this year, a social-media user quipped, “Trump wearing suits with shoulder pads is hilarious.”
After noticing his bulkier appearance, another person blasted, “The shoulders on his suit are embarrassingly large.”
The takedown continued. “Trump has built a life on smoke and mirrors, a ‘fake it ’til you make it’. Aside from lying about his height and weight, his suits must be tailored with massive shoulder pads. He cheats at golf, can’t pass cognitive tests, has no driver’s license, can’t close an umbrella.”
According to reports, Trump has long favored suits crafted by the Italian luxury fashion house Brioni. Off-the-rack suits typically start at around $6,000, but the company also offers a bespoke tailoring service.
“Trump seems to like Brioni suits for the same reason he likes gold toilets,” menswear historian G. Bruce Boyer told GQ in 2025. “They’re expensive.”
It remains unclear how much the president currently pays for his outfits, but it’s evident that the billionaire enjoys slipping into padded suits that do not fit properly.
In 2024, a snapshot of Trump went viral for his noticeable shoulder pads. The internet had a field day teasing him for channeling a “middle linebacker” during a technical-difficulty-plagued interview with Elon Musk.
“I see Trump more of a running back,” read one humorous comment online.
The president continued experimenting with his look through the summer of 2026 after struggling to accept how others perceive him.
Even his hair underwent several transformations. Trump appeared in Las Vegas in August with a noticeably fuller head of hair than usual. As rumors about Trump wearing a hairpiece or wig circulated, he was eventually compelled to acknowledge the truth.
Then September arrived, and the president denied wearing a wig before unveiling a dramatically darker brunette shade.
However, the blond, thinning hair soon resurfaced, with bald spots hard to ignore.
“I’ve got to do a little better back there,” he told a crowd at the Republican National Committee’s inaugural midterm convention in Dallas.
While Trump continues to experiment with his hair, his baggy suits remain a familiar element of his public image.
For those paying close attention, the latest shoulder-pad controversy demonstrates that even small details can dominate the conversation.
