Donald Trump aimed for a spotless Reflecting Pool to showcase grandeur. Instead, his chosen approach has left this storied Washington landmark in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
What began as a $1.5 million repair project has allegedly ballooned into nearly a $20 million undertaking. And Trump’s declaration that the work was “totally complete” has proven easier to announce than to realize.
Now, renewed scrutiny is revealing more than just a flawed coating on the pool, exposing a renovation saga that keeps finding new ways to undercut his boasts.

The president has spent months touting his improvements to the historic site. He even blamed vandals for damaging the costly blue coating.

But just as Trump believed victory could be proclaimed, cameras captured another development suggesting the pool isn’t quite ready for its moment in the spotlight.
A reporter who has been closely tracking the troubled project says the construction team has undergone yet another shake-up.
Her updates have raised fresh questions about who is actually supervising the renovation.
On Oct. 6, Trump confidently proclaimed that the job was finished.
“The Reflecting Pool is totally complete, and we changed the old pipes,” he told reporters. “I’m going to visit.” It seems, however, someone forgot to tell the water.
According to The Washington Post, the pool began filling over the weekend. Yet footage from EarthCam indicated water levels had noticeably dropped by Thursday, Oct. 15.
Workers were seen power-washing sections of the basin and clearing debris from the grates. Murky water remained near the Lincoln Memorial, while organic matter gathered in one corner.
The National Park Service insisted the unusual activity was intentional, explaining that crews were partly filling and draining the basin to flush out debris from the newly repaired plumbing.
Yet the explanation did little to quiet those watching the presidential project.
“There is less water in the reflecting pool today (first photo) than there was on Monday night (second photo),” one observer posted on Oct. 14 after sharing two images of the monument.
Another challenged Trump’s claim, posting footage and writing, “Trump claimed the Reflecting Pool was ‘totally complete.’ It is not complete. Video from this morning 10/15 9AM.”
“This is just sad. Will it even be refilled and fences removed before the first snow falls? Probably not,” commented another Washingtonian.
X user and self-styled “Running Reporter” Emily Miller, who has been providing firsthand updates, noted something else.
“Did they just turn BACK ON water at the Lincoln Reflecting Pool? See the water key tool in the grass and a ripple at the spout?” she asked.
Her observation prompted another X user to suggest she reach out to someone overseeing the renovation: “We can only hope! You should have the direct line to the foreman or project manager; you’d be doing him a solid by providing accurate and trusted information.”
Miller’s response uncovered another unexpected development.
“This is the newest contractor. I don’t know them,” she disclosed. A follower pushed back, saying, “But there should be a project manager overseeing the contractors.”
That prompted Miller to share details from a personal conversation with the previous project manager.
“I spoke with the project manager on his last day,” she explained. “He’s not working on this project anymore. I don’t know who the new one is. Everything just shifted last week when the original waterproofing contractor left.”
David V remained hopeful that Miller would eventually have better news.
Meanwhile, another observer found humor in the fluid water levels.
He tweeted, “The Reflecting Pool is like the ocean — the tide comes in then the tide goes out, and before you know it, the tide comes in again.”
Miller offered the obvious punchline: “Except it’s a pool with no tides.”
The contractor shake-up adds another chapter to a renovation already tainted by controversy.
An earlier 75-page inspection report identified at least 85 defects in the pool’s coating, documenting peeling, buckling, and improper installation methods.
The project, initially projected at roughly $1.5 million, has reportedly expanded to nearly $20 million.
Trump previously blamed vandalism for the damaged lining. Former Olympic canoeist David Hearn even faced criminal charges after handling peeling material, though those charges were ultimately dismissed.
According to an inspection report dated August 6 and obtained by The Washington Post, the waterproof coating buckled across eight of the basin’s ten expansion joints.
Inspectors also documented nearly 40 blisters and about two dozen areas where the coating peeled away.
Photographs showed workers still applying the coating on June 3, just one day before the pool began filling, despite manufacturer guidelines requiring a 72-hour curing period.
The extensive and detailed report attributed the widespread failures to installation problems and rushed construction ahead of the country’s 250th birthday celebrations, explicitly noting that vandalism was not a factor.
Now, with water rising and falling and contractors continually changing, Americans remain waiting for the finished product Trump promised.
For a president who proclaimed the job complete, the Reflecting Pool is certainly keeping everyone on their toes.
