Since taking on the role, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has found himself embroiled in one public controversy after another, with each new incident piling onto questions about his leadership. The war of words with Iran has only sharpened that scrutiny, turning every decision into a high-stakes test and every misstep into a fresh flashpoint.
That pressure came into sharp focus as wounded American troops returning from an Army outpost in Kuwait—hit by an Iranian drone—began pushing back on Hegseth’s account of the deadly strike that claimed six U.S. service members’ lives and left dozens more injured.
In a conversation with CBS News, a survivor—whose name has been kept confidential—laid out how the assault on the Army’s 103rd Sustainment Command unfolded and what followed in its wake.
The soldier, who was stationed at the outpost along with roughly 60 others, characterized the strike as “something you’d see in a movie.”

“Everything shook,” the serviceman recalled. “Everything—your ears were ringing. There was dust and smoke everywhere.”
Iran launched the drone against the Kuwait installation on March 1, a day after President Donald Trump, in concert with Israel, initiated a military offensive against Tehran without congressional authorization and while talks with the Islamic Republic over its nuclear ambitions and weaponry were still ongoing.
The outpost in Kuwait was assisting in coordinating personnel, equipment, and weaponry across the region when the deadly strike occurred.
The soldier told CBS that he felt compelled to speak publicly about what actually transpired.
“For me, telling the truth matters,” he said.
His unit had relocated to the Kuwait outpost just before the conflict began in late February, despite intelligence indicating that the area was dangerous.
“We moved closer to Iran, into a highly unsafe area that was a known target,” he confirmed.
Asked what guidance had been given about why the unit was relocating to that installation initially, given the danger, he said he had no explanation.
“I don’t think there was a good reason ever articulated,” the soldier conceded, before starkly contradicting Hegseth’s account of the strike and calling it a “direct hit.”
That is not how Hegseth described the event the day after the attack. He labeled it a “squirter,” characterizing it as a drone that penetrated the military’s air defenses, according to Raw Story.
“It happened to strike a fortified tactical operations center, but these weapons are undeniably powerful,” Hegseth asserted.
When pressed about what fortifications existed at the outpost, the soldier was unequivocal.
“I’d classify it as none, in terms of drone defense capabilities.”
Another wounded serviceman recalled the moment: “It was chaos.” He added, “There was no single triage line. You’re either on one side of the fire or the other.”

Un cessez-le-feu précaire de deux semaines demeure en place, mais une partie de l’accord apparent prévoyait qu’Iran renonce à rouvrir le passage stratégique du détroit d’Hormuz. Cela ne s’est pas encore produit, et après l’échec des pourparlers entre le vice-président JD Vance et les négociateurs iranien ce week-end, les deux camps semblent à nouveau au bord de la guerre.
