Former NBA Star Tim Duncan Debuts Unrecognizable New Look

March 8, 2026

Tim Duncan, the legend of the NBA, recently appeared at a San Antonio Spurs game looking far removed from the player casual fans once remembered.

The five-time NBA champion, formerly recognizable by his tightly cropped hair, now sports shoulder-length locs that frame his face along with a full beard. Those carefully maintained dreadlocks have altogether transformed the Hall of Famer into someone nearly unrecognizable to those who watched him dominate the league for 19 seasons.

The dramatic change in hairstyle didn’t happen overnight, and while his shorter dreadlocks drew widespread attention when he delivered his acceptance speech at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame induction in 2021, Duncan’s latest appearance has sparked a wave of headlines about “The Big Fundamental’s” daring style evolution.

When Duncan showed up at San Antonio’s Frost Bank Center to watch his Spurs play the Golden State Warriors on March 30 — a 148-106 loss for his former team — casual observers were startled by his new appearance in a photo with his girlfriend, reality TV star Vanessa Macias, 44.

The 15-time All-Star sat courtside with Macias, who wore glamorous, loose curls and proudly donned San Antonio gear. Duncan chose a laid-back outfit, featuring a raglan-style shirt with camo-colored sleeves rather than team merchandise, perhaps signaling a broader evolution beyond simply being a basketball icon.

Many fans hopped onto X with surprised reactions to the new look when a commenter asked, “What’s going on with Tim Duncan?”

One user quipped, “He’s comfortable and chilling… for real.”

“Bro wasn’t exactly a GQ model in his prime years. He genuinely appears more relaxed at 48 than at 35,” another commenter wrote.

Not everyone welcomed the new hairstyle and relaxed vibe, however.

One social media user asked, “What’s up with this dude… is he on a hippie journey? Is he about to wander in the desert?”

Another commented, “Bro looks like he got lost at sea.”

One admirer even compared him to Lord Corlys “The Sea Snake” Velaryon from “The House of The Dragon.”

Having earned $245 million in his career and solidified his status as one of basketball’s premier power forwards, Duncan has evidently decided that retirement is the ideal moment to adopt a completely fresh look.

And this isn’t the sole transformation the 48-year-old basketball icon has undertaken since leaving the court. He has also taken up mixed martial arts training.

“When he walked through the door, it was clear he was fiercely motivated to learn martial arts, and his movement, his quick assimilation of the discipline, was phenomenal,” Jason Echols told Bleacher Report.

Echols is Duncan’s MMA coach, who has been guiding the former player for more than a decade at Echols Fitness in San Antonio.

Duncan’s physical change aligns with significant shifts in his personal life over the past ten years.

His private life has evolved as well. After divorcing college sweetheart Amy Sherrill in 2013, with whom he shares two children, Duncan found happiness with Amazing Race alum Macias. The couple, together for over ten years, welcomed a daughter, Quill — named after Marvel’s Peter Quill of the Guardians of the Galaxy, according to Sporting News.

Macias announced their daughter’s arrival in March 2017, describing her as their “little soul-changer.”

It seems Macias maintains an amicable relationship with Duncan’s other children from his marriage, as the entire family was present in 2016 when the NBA legend’s jersey was retired by his former team.

Even after stepping away from the game, Duncan remains connected to the Spurs. His brief role as an assistant coach during the 2019-2020 season was one of the few moments he stepped back into the public eye.

While his appearance has shifted, his devotion to the Spurs endures. He continues to cheer for his former team, proving he’s still a Spur for life — just with noticeably more hair.
