Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige unveiled a wealth of updates at D23, but the standout revelation was the casting of a fresh Storm, with Maya Boyd stepping into the role.
This moment has been a long time coming.
Halle Berry first introduced the Omega-level mutant to the big screen in the original X-Men film in 2000, reprising the part in three more installments before retiring the platinum wig.
Alexandria Shipp later took on the character in two films, portraying a younger version of Storm in the rebooted X-Men franchise, but many fans felt the portrayal left something to be desired.
Then Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox for an eye-popping $71.3 billion brought the film rights to X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool under Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios.
So, with Feige finally steering the X-Men movie franchise—an arc that essentially began his Hollywood career—expectations ran high about who would portray Ororo Munroe in Marvel Studios’ rebooted X-Men series.
Maya Boyd Was Always Destined for Stardom Before Landing the Storm Role
Prior to the grand reveal at D23, a number of names were circulating, including Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Jayme Lawson (Sinners), and Yetide Badaki (American Gods).
But Feige and the team stunned audiences when they introduced the 23-year-old Broadway performer to fans at D23 as the new Storm.
Long before stepping onto the stage in the bright lights, sharing the spotlight with Taraji P. Henson in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Boyd studied at the University of Michigan, earning her bachelor’s degree. While still in college, she secured a Broadway role at a young age before making her New York City theater debut in Merrily We Roll Along in 2023.
After leaving the show, Boyd stepped into the lead role of Juliet for eight weeks in the popular jukebox musical.
Now she’s poised to make her big-screen debut in what could become one of Marvel Studios’ biggest movies outside of Spider-Man or The Avengers when it lands in May 2028.
We’re excited to see her command the elements and lead the MCU into a Storm-filled era of the Mutant Saga when it officially begins.
