Janelle Monáe embodies the essence of a leading heroine. In moments that demand attention, bold moves, and show-stopping style that leaves people speechless, Janelle sets the standard and does so on her own terms.
Just as in her music and performances, her fashion philosophy has no limits or conventions. Halloween is the prime occasion to witness her iconic blend of flair, audacity, and playful imagination.
She is the HalloQueen, and she is perfectly aware of it.
Why Janelle Monáe Sees Halloween as Her Happy Space
“Halloween feels like a joyful realm to me,” Monáe told The Hollywood Reporter. “That sentiment has stuck with me since childhood. It invites a broader discussion about how we become agents of joy, of happiness, and of imagination. I’m pursuing this because I want to see more of it, and my heart needs it.”
Janelle’s Halloween ensembles reflect that philosophy. She’s worn fully imagined costumes, from E.T. in 2024 to the Cat in the Hat in 2025, and she has used prosthetic makeup to morph into different beings — and this year, she goes fully creature.
Janelle Monáe Transforms into a Creepy Couture Creature for Bacardi
In her latest Bacardi collaboration, Janelle becomes a creepy couture creature. Returning for a second year, the rum brand serves as the official spirits partner for her Wondaween Festival: Creature Carnival, which will take over a secret Los Angeles venue on October 29.
To complete the creature, she topped a peach-pink shag wig with a black hat. Covering her face in a wrinkled, green-tinged prosthetic, she swapped one eye for a hot pink swirl. She wore a ruffled white blouse with black-and-white striped suspenders and long strands of pearls mixed with black beads. She even added prosthetic hands, down to the bloody knuckles.
In one of those prosthetic hands, she held her signature drink of the season, the Spookito. The Spookito is Bacardi’s Halloween twist on the classic mojito. .Here’s how to make one at home.
Ingredients
1.5 oz Bacardi Superior rum
1 oz lime juice
0.5 oz simple syrup
0.25 oz grenadine
8 to 10 mint leaves
Soda water, to top
How To Make It
Muddle the mint with the lime juice and simple syrup. Add the Bacardi and crushed ice. Stir gently, then top with soda water. Finish by drizzling the grenadine over the top, and garnish with a mint sprig.
Creature Carnival may mark a fresh chapter, but Janelle has been shaping her Halloween legacy for years.
What Proves Janelle Monáe Holds the Title of Halloween Queen
Her track record goes back to childhood. Growing up in Kansas City, Janelle dressed as Chucky, mask and overalls included. She even slept in the mask, she told Dread Central. Her mom’s reaction: “I think something’s wrong with you, but I love you.”
Today, planning begins years in advance. She told People that the E.T. costume took two years to perfect. Designer and tailor Alex Navarro and stylist Alexandra Mandelkorn help bring her looks to life.
For Janelle, every costume is a full character, from morning to night.
“When I slip into costume, I become someone else,” Monáe told the Los Angeles Times. “Whether I’m a white rabbit or Diva Plavalaguna [from “The Fifth Element”], when I say I inhabited these characters, I mean the entire day and night in which you interacted with me, I was in those roles. As a world-builder who has had the privilege to act, make music, and craft immersive worlds, I believe Wondaween Season lets all of the Janelles inside me come fully to life.”
