Nike Taps Grace Ladoja for Homecoming Air Max, First African Woman to Design a Signature Sneaker

April 29, 2026

Celebrations are in order for Grace Ladoja, the inventive mind behind the Homecoming Festival. Nike has joined forces with the multi-talented creator to produce a signature sneaker, the Homecoming X Nike Air Max Plus, honoring her trailblazing festival, Homecoming—a five-day cultural exchange in Lagos that brings together music, fashion, art, and sport. Through this partnership, Ladoja becomes the first African woman to design a shoe for the global sneaker brand.

Since its debut in 2017, she has curated a space where African and international creatives convene, collaborate, and push culture forward. The festival’s ninth edition took place in Lagos from April 2 to April 7.

Grace Ladoja drew inspiration from her two homes—the cities of Lagos and London—to craft the Homecoming x Nike Air Max Plus.

To mark the moment, Ladoja unveiled the Homecoming x Nike Air Max Plus. Drawn from her West African roots, the sneaker arrives in two distinct colorways: a black edition that evokes the Pan-African flag and a bold orange variant named “African Sunrise,” according to WWD.

Beyond its symbolic color story, the design is rich with personal and cultural details. The standard mesh on the model has been swapped for a tighter, custom weave inspired by African bathing sponges, a common everyday object in many Nigerian households. The toe box is given a dipped finish, nodding to West Africa’s enduring indigo-dyeing heritage.

The narrative continues with the laces, which include extra non-functional strands as a nod to Nigeria’s bold and expressive style. The sneakers also come with removable charms—cowrie shells, eagles, a black globe, and gold Africa pendants—adding yet another layer of meaning.

“The shoe fuses London and Lagos: London in the silhouette. Lagos in the craftsmanship. Every detail carries a story: Nigeria-inspired charms, textures, materials, and everyday life,” she told NWE in an interview, as noted in an Instagram post shared on April 3.

Born in London to Nigerian parents and currently based in Lagos, Ladoja channels what she calls her “two homes” into this project, marrying the iconic Air Max Plus form with unmistakably African design elements. Her bicultural upbringing—rooted in the vibrant creative traditions of both regions—shapes not only her work as a designer but also the overall vision and energy of the Homecoming festival.

“Both places are a core part of who I am. The festival enables us to empower the next generation, create opportunities, and give talent global visibility,” Ladoja added.

The Homecoming x Nike Air Max Plus is slated to release on April 23 through Nike’s SNKRS app in select markets, with a price tag of $180. Will you be adding a pair to your collection?
