President Donald Trump is once again putting his mark on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
The president has unveiled another dramatic makeover for the iconic site, and it’s already drawing attention.
Yet the newest design has onlookers taking a closer look, raising questions about whether Trump has pushed it too far this time.
The Washington landmark has been making headlines for months. The costly renovation has produced issues week after week, including a sizable algae problem.
The pool’s liner has peeled away. People were even arrested and charged with vandalizing the century-old structure. At this point, the Reflecting Pool has produced more plot twists than some reality shows.
On Aug. 21, Trump added another controversial chapter to the saga.

He posted an AI-generated image showing the Reflecting Pool with a giant outline of his face across the water. His glowing profile stretched toward the Lincoln Memorial.
The water appeared bright blue, contrasting with the “American Blue” color the contractors were told to use. Even more troubling, someone etched Trump’s face in vivid green across the surface.
Given the pool’s algae history, the internet immediately flagged the questionable color choice.

“Give me a break, just do your f—king job,” one person wrote. Another said, “There’s the vandal he was talking about.”
The jokes come as the administration faces fresh questions about the pool’s troubled renovation.
A National Park Service engineer reportedly warned officials on June 11 that the pool’s liner had begun peeling, just days after workers refilled it. NBC News reported that court documents show the engineer blamed the problem on “overspraying” during installation.
Former Olympian David Hearn was later charged with vandalism. Prosecutors accused him of pulling up part of the lining with his bare hands during a June 19 visit to the site. Hearn pleaded not guilty.
The Reflecting Pool is a perfect metaphor for the Trump administration:

His case has since been dropped. His attorneys are now seeking to permanently prevent prosecutors from reviving it.
That made Trump’s green digital makeover even easier to mock.
“Trump already ruined the Reflecting Pool. This is just him signing the work,” said one observer. Meanwhile, a sharp-eyed commenter who zoomed in asked, “Is that the algae?”
Many blasted him online for presenting his wrapped version of the Reflecting Pool as a rebrand, ignoring what had occurred there in recent weeks.

“Peak Trump? Posting an AI fantasy of his own face in the Reflecting Pool while the actual pool has been drained and is under repair is honestly pretty on-brand,” read one comment.
“Rebranding the actual algae blooms as a conceptual AI-generated art piece featuring his own face is a level of elite social media spin that only he could pull off! Quantum-level trolling,” another person joked.
Reality apparently needed a little help.
Then, after a summer of drifting pieces, dead ducklings, and other issues with the pool, one social media user offered a thought tied to this latest post.
This isn’t Trump’s first attempt to make the Reflecting Pool look better online than it does in real life.
In April, Trump posted side-by-side images supposedly comparing the pool under Barack Obama with his own version. Viewers quickly questioned the graphics.
Some spotted suspicious details, including clouds that looked identical. It was clear he had used AI or Photoshop to craft the image.
In June, another altered image depicted a dumpster filled with filthy debris. Trump used it to blame Obama for the pool’s condition. Over the summer, he also shared AI images showing himself and allies floating in the Reflecting Pool.
The AI fever appears to have spread beyond Trump’s Truth Social account.
On Aug. 19, the Department of Education posted an AI-generated cartoon promoting the Freedom 250 Grand Prix. The IndyCar race is set to circle the National Mall on Sunday.

The cartoon resembled Mario Kart: Washington Edition, with Trump depicted racing through the capital. Yet viewers paid more attention to the odd-looking characters riding behind him than the race itself.
One commenter wrote after viewing the post, “I don’t know about anybody else, but I could care less about this stupid pool. Our country is falling apart, and we’re talking about a pool with his head in it.”
The administration appears headed toward a tough midterm race. It is also contending with a war it began with Iran and a revolving door of staff. For critics, the bizarre imagery does little to convey presidential gravitas.
Trump desired his likeness to be etched into history. The internet, however, saw algae in the green take instead.
