Donald Trump remains steadfast in his stance. A freshly installed sign by the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has ignited a flood of reactions across social media.
Displayed on National Park Service letterhead, the notice assigns blame to “previous administrations” for allowing more than half of the pool’s 58 water ports to clog up after years without a proper system flush.
The timing couldn’t be more delicate for Trump, who has spent weeks attributing the damage to “vandals” armed with knives and box cutters—despite his Justice Department’s decision to drop charges in the case, citing shoddy renovation work.
However, sharp-eyed enthusiasts quickly detected a quirk in the wording: the sign blames “previous administrations” for years of neglect, yet Trump himself is a former administrator, having served as president from 2017 to 2021.
In other terms, the phrasing seems to include Trump’s first term among those being blamed, producing an unforeseen twist in the message.
Fans rushed to comment. “So the real truth is coming out,” one observer remarked. “He knows he is ‘previous administration’….”
The discovery arrives as a fresh chapter unfolds in the Reflecting Pool saga, with court documents shedding new light on what went wrong and who bore responsibility for the damage.

Meanwhile, former Olympic canoeist David Hearn ended up in handcuffs after pedaling 50 miles to the capital on June 19.
Marshals detained him for touching the loose coating at a pool that was already peeling.

He later told the Associated Press that his intent was “to satisfy my curiosity as a citizen.” That moment escalated into a felony property-destruction charge and months of charges from the president.

Yet, a fresh filing from the D.C. Superior Court opens the case wide, according to Raw Story. Hearn’s lawyers are seeking to permanently bar further prosecutions.
They pointed to evidence not produced by Hearn or his defense, but rather from the government’s own engineer.
The most striking aspect is that what Trump labeled as a crime scene was never touched by an external vandal; it was opened by the government’s own engineer who tried to patch a hurried job before Trump’s stated deadline.
Federal agents photographed the pool’s damage on July 13 as a National Park Service engineer walked the site with them.
According to the filing, the engineer admitted he had cut loose liner or coating with a knife to stop the peeling from spreading.
“The engineer told the agents that he had personally cut loose liner or coating with a knife to prevent the peeling from worsening,” the filing states. Prosecutors’ papers say the engineer decided that trimming away peeling sections was better than letting them flap about. Hearn’s lawyers contend that the damage attributed to their client existed before he ever touched the pool.
Trump’s estimate of the alleged damage swelled from 250 feet to 300 yards. Hearn’s attorneys argued that prosecutors rushed the case to align with the administration’s expedited renovation timeline.
Then came July 31. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro moved to drop the case, acknowledging that the damage originated from a botched installation, not vandalism, which contradicts the narrative pushed by the Department of the Interior and its chief, Doug Burgum. Trump did not react calmly. He claimed Pirro “choked” and “folded like an umbrella.”
CNN and other outlets reported that Trump was enraged with Pirro all weekend and allegedly considered removing her from her role.
By Monday, Trump reportedly broke down in the Oval Office, insisting the renovation had been flawless until “somebody came in and cut it, just like they did the grass.”
He referenced aerial photos showing an anti-Trump message and claimed cameras had captured individuals with box cutters.
The president admitted he wasn’t “100% thrilled” with the contractor’s hurried work, then pivoted back to blaming vandals. He asserted he possessed photos and video showing “people on the side cutting it with a box knife.”
Pirro was said to have arrived at the White House later that day with an evidence box, seeking to persuade Trump that the charges against Hearn should be dropped.
The New York Times reports that during that Oval Office meeting Pirro confronted Burgum forcefully, allegedly the very person who helped sell the vandalism narrative to Trump.
No judge has yet ruled on permanently closing the case. Hearn’s team argues he remains exposed to intimidation because Trump refuses to accept the dismissal.

“She said there was no vandalism. There was tremendous vandalism,” he asserted. “She made a terrible mistake.”
When asked whether Pirro should be fired, Trump stopped short of calling for her removal. “I think she made a terrible decision,” he stated. “That doesn’t mean change.”
