On Friday, Donald Trump summoned reporters into the Oval Office and asked that a specific figure be noted in writing.
All fifty states, together with Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, had joined a plan aimed at bringing down Medicaid drug prices.
Then a journalist pressed him on the message behind his United Nations remarks.
The reporter wanted to know about the message of his speech there.
What Trump reached for instead was a grievance he has been nursing for a solid year. The same one that once had his press secretary publicly demanding that U.N. staffers be fired.
To understand why the room broke, you have to go back to Sept. 23, 2025.
That day, Trump and first lady Melania Trump stepped onto an escalator at U.N. headquarters in New York on the way to the General Assembly hall, and it abruptly stopped.

The couple walked up the stalled steps like an ordinary staircase.
Trump spent the following days calling it “triple sabotage,” and said the people responsible “should be arrested.”
Additionally, he wrote on Truth Social that “it’s amazing that Melania and I didn’t fall forward onto the sharp edges of these steel steps, face first.”
The U.N. had a duller explanation.
A spokesperson said a videographer from the American delegation who ran ahead of Trump most likely triggered a built-in safety mechanism at the top of the escalator, according to CBS News.
Furthermore, it was noted that the White House was running its own teleprompter that day, too.
Back in the Oval Office on Friday, Trump skipped past the question and went straight to the escalator. “You remember that? They turned off the escalator,” he said.
Then came the part nobody asked for.
“Fortunately, my first lady was very strong, and I was able to grab her back or another part of her body,” Trump said.
Behind him, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services chief Dr. Mehmet Oz began to giggle.
Trump turned in his chair toward the noise, looked up at Oz, and just kept going.
“It was actually a little bit lower than the back, and it kept me standing tall,” he said, smiling. “I was standing very tall.”
Here’s the problem with the story. In his own written account a year ago, Trump said he and Melania survived the stalled escalator because “we were each holding the handrail tightly.” Not because he grabbed her.
And the footage from that day, which has since gone viral, shows the first lady ahead of him on the steps, one hand on the rail, climbing without assistance. There is no visible moment of him putting a hand anywhere on her.
On social media, including Threads and X, people went straight back to the actual footage.
“I dont see him grabbing anything but the handle of the escalator. Can’t even remember,” one viewer said.
Another zeroed in on the logic: “She was so strong that he copped a feel? In any event, walking stairs doesn’t take great strength or courage.”
Another person weighed in, writing, “None of that happened when it stopped. Does he not realize he’s always on camera.”
And one reply captured the Oval Office scene itself: “It’s like watching a kid play in the teacher’s chair, but this is the US president.”
Friday wasn’t even the first time he’s told it this way. In February, hosting the inaugural meeting of his Board of Peace in Washington, Trump worked the escalator into remarks about Gaza reconstruction.
“It’s lucky my movie star first lady was in front of me, because I put my hand on the certain part of her body and was able to stop my fall,” he said then, according to Yahoo News, adding that she was “in the proper location for me.”
The version keeps getting more specific. In September 2025 it was two people gripping a handrail. By February it was a hand on a certain part.
By Friday it was lower than the back, delivered to a room of cabinet officials assembled to talk about prescription drug costs.
Trump had previously admitted on camera that he has to “be careful” on stairs before scrambling to walk the admission back.
The escalator wasn’t even the only detour of the afternoon.
Earlier in the same event, Trump cut Kennedy off mid-sentence to talk about how the health secretary looked, before making a remark about his chest.
The drug pricing announcement never really stood a chance.
