1. Lisa Bonet in the Role of Denise Huxtable
Denise appeared for only one season at Hillman, yet Lisa Bonet left an indelible mark. After departing the series, Bonet pursued film roles including Enemy of the State and High Fidelity. She welcomed a daughter, Zoë Kravitz, with Lenny Kravitz and later had two children with Jason Momoa. In recent years, her career has been more selective, but Denise remains one of the figures who helped shape A Different World’s legacy.
2. Jasmine Guy in the Role of Whitley Gilbert
Whitley evolved from a bougie Southern belle we loved to loathe into one of television’s most cherished Black characters. Jasmine Guy stayed with the show for all six seasons and even directed and wrote episodes. Since then, she has continued acting across television, film and stage, appearing in projects such as The Vampire Diaries, Harlem, and Grosse Pointe Garden Society. She also earned an Emmy in 2023. People’s look at the original cast notes that Guy remains active in the entertainment industry and in Atlanta’s theater scene.
3. Kadeem Hardison in the Role of Dwayne Wayne
Dwayne Wayne made flip-up sunglasses and math nerds cool before “nerd culture” was a mainstream thing. Kadeem Hardison has kept working steadily, with appearances in The Chi, Grown-ish, The Lincoln Lawyer and Euphoria. He has also explored directing, helming episodes of K.C. Undercover.
4. Dawnn Lewis in the Role of Jaleesa Vinson
Jaleesa was the mature friend filled with wisdom and a dynamic personality. Dawnn Lewis went on to lead roles in Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, Dreamgirls and numerous TV projects. She is also a seasoned voice actress and, perhaps surprisingly, helped write and perform the iconic A Different World theme song.
5. Cree Summer in the Role of Freddie Brooks
Cree Summer infused Freddie Brooks with free-spirited, socially aware energy. After A Different World, she became one of the most prolific voice actors in the industry, lending her talents to Rugrats, The Proud Family, Atlantis, Clifford the Big Red Dog and a multitude of other animated projects. She has also returned to live-action work, including a recurring role on Abbott Elementary.
6. Darryl M. Bell in the Role of Ron Johnson
Ron Johnson stood as Dwayne’s hilarious best friend, a musician with a talent for chaos. Darryl M. Bell appeared in all six seasons and later starred in Homeboys in Outer Space, Are We There Yet? and Insecure. He has remained closely tied to the show’s legacy, including participating in the cast’s HBCU tour.
7. Charnele Brown in the Role of Kimberly Reese
Kim Reese stood out as the brilliant pre-med student who proved that smart, driven ambition could be exceptionally cool. Charnele Brown has continued acting in projects like Living Single, Girlfriends, My Wife and Kids and The Reading. She also developed into a writer, producer, and educator in the performing arts.
8. Jada Pinkett Smith in the Role of Lena James
Before rising to superstardom, Jada Pinkett Smith spent time at Hillman as Lena James, a student with fervent passion and outspoken views. Since then, she has built an expansive career as an actress, producer, and entrepreneur, appearing in films like The Nutty Professor, Set It Off, The Matrix franchise and Girls Trip. She also pursued music with the metal group Wicked Wisdom.
9. Sinbad in the Role of Coach Walter Oakes
Sinbad brought his signature humor to Hillman as Coach Walter Oakes. He exited the show in 1990 to pursue film and his own sitcom, eventually starring in The Sinbad Show and films such as Houseguest, First Kid, Jingle All the Way, and Good Burger. After surviving a stroke in 2020, Sinbad began making a return to entertainment, including appearances in Tyler Perry’s Straw and stage performances in 2026.
10. Glynn Turman in the Role of Colonel Bradford Taylor
Glynn Turman joined the ensemble as Colonel Taylor, a professor and military veteran who eventually married Jaleesa. His work beyond Hillman has been diverse, delivering notable performances in The Wire, House of Lies, How to Get Away with Murder, Queen Sugar, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and Rustin. He also earned an Emmy in 2008 for In Treatment.
11. Marisa Tomei in the Role of Maggie Lauten
Yes, Oscar winner Marisa Tomei spent a stint at Hillman as Maggie Lauten during the first season. She later became a household name after winning an Academy Award for My Cousin Vinny. Tomei went on to portray Aunt May in the Spider-Man films and has continued a prolific career across film, television, and theater.
12. Debbie Allen: The Woman Who Helped Shape Hillman
Discussing A Different World without mentioning Debbie Allen is impossible. As executive producer, director, and the driving creative force behind the series, Allen helped reshape the show after its initial season and steered it toward the HBCU-centered cultural phenomenon audiences remember today. Her influence extends well beyond Hillman, with a remarkable career spanning dance, television, film, and theater.
13. Jenifer Lewis in the Role of Dean Dorothy Davenport
Jenifer Lewis brought a commanding presence to Hillman as Dean Dorothy Davenport. After A Different World, she became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable character actresses, appearing in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Sister Act, The Preacher’s Wife, Black-ish, and Mom. She has also earned the title of “Mother of Black Hollywood” for the countless performers she has mentored throughout her career.
And the rest of the Hillman family?
Lou Myers, who portrayed The Pit’s unforgettable Vernon Gaines, passed away in 2013.
As Yahoo Life’s cast retrospective notes, the show’s legacy extends beyond nostalgia. A Different World helped generations of Black viewers envision themselves at an HBCU. Now, the family is heading back to Hillman. And honestly, we’re ready to unwind, relate, and release all over again.
