Where do we even start?

You were dubbed the voice for a reason. Your unmatched vocal power, not to mention that enormous three-octave range and crystalline tone, coupled with precise pitch control – Whitney, you were born to share your voice with the world, and we are grateful that you accepted the call.

Whether it was the time you performed “How Will I Know” at the 1986 American Music Awards, or the seamless execution of “Saving All My Love For You” (the same year by the way) at the 1986 Grammy Awards, and let’s not forget the way you completely transformed the national anthem when you sang “The Star-Spangled Banner at Super Bowl XXV in 1991, you more than earned your nickname and being referred to as one of the greatest singers of all time.

Despite being the daughter of beloved singer Cissy Houston and, not to mention, the cousin of Dionne Warwick, you still carved out a lane of your own, crafting timeless hits that stand the test of time.

Of course, the music industry has never seen another person like you, because you were one of one, a true anomaly. A legend gone way too soon.

Singers of the past and present have looked to you, and still look to you as their blueprint. The holy grail of vocalists, if you will, and our only wish is that you felt that love while you were here and that it still touches you now that you are no longer earthside with us.

Your performance in The Bodyguard possessed an on-screen chemistry with Kevin Costner that cannot be replicated. You made many of us root for you to cheat on your movie husband (Courtney B. Vance) with a ghost (Denzel Washington) through your role in The Preacher’s Wife, and showed us the depths that exist within Black womanhood and sisterhood as Savannah in Waiting to Exhale.

Whitney, you were merely proof that you cannot box a talented Black woman in. It’s often overlooked the impact you made on film and television movies through your BrownHouse Productions imprint. The Princess Diaries, The Cheetah Girls, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, and Sparkle are just a few of the projects where you wore the producer hat, and you wore it well.

Moreover, one of the greatest roles we got to witness you excel at was being the mother to your beloved baby girl, Bobbi Kristina Brown. We can only hope that the two of you are now reunited and inseparable in heaven.
